The Horse Lifeboat Demonstrations on Ameland take you back in time.

In 1824, horses were used for the first time on Ameland to refloat the lifeboat.

 Black page

A black page in the history of the horse rescue boat is the accident that happened on 14 August 1979.

On this day, eight horses drowned during the launching of the lifeboat, a shocking event for all rescue workers and islanders.

The grave of the perished horses and the memorial plaque, can still be seen on the East side of the Lifeboat Path in Hollum.

Nowadays, the horse rescue boat is only used during the Horse Rescue Demonstrations on Ameland.
