May is a wonderful time to go on holiday. Spring has sprung and everything is fresh and green. A good time for a long beach walk and a lovely bike ride. Avoiding the crowds on Ameland goes best if you come between school holidays and public holidays for a week, midweek or Long Weekend or just a few days in May.

School holidays and public holidays: different schools operate different holiday weeks in May (depending on how Easter and Ascension fall). So there is the official May holidays and the preceding week or the following week (which then sometimes coincides with ascension). Even Pentecost sometimes falls in May, but it is usually june by then.
